Tim Howard has hilariously revealed how he went to a meeting to sign for Manchester United – in the kit of bitter local rivals Manchester City.

The American goalkeeper joined the English giants of MLS side MetroStars in 2003 in a shock move.

And Howard, speaking on former United teammate Ben Foster’s ‘Fozcast’ podcast on YouTubeopened up about the circumstances of his arrival – he admitted he accidentally wore light blue – and risked the ire of fiery manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

He said, ‘This is how young and stupid and innocent I was. I play for the MetroStars, I’m in Boston, we play the [New England] Revolution and I know this is my last game and in the next few days I’m going to Manchester to sign.

‘So I thought, ‘ok, I’m going to’ [department store] Macy’s and get a nice shirt and tie combo to go with this big baggy suit I have, it’s going to be great.”

“So I get this pretty light blue shirt and tie with beautiful diagonal navy, white, and light blue stripes, and I’ve thought ‘nailed’.

But the move clearly didn't infuriate Ferguson too much, as he started the season as No. 1

“I’m here and someone told me a few days later ‘those are the colors of Manchester City, you know’. So I signed for Man Utd, I’ve got the scarf and I’m shaking hands with Alex Ferguson and I’m wearing City colours.’

The incident clearly didn’t scare Ferguson too much, as Howard started that season as first-choice between the sticks, replacing Fabien Barthez as number 1.

The 121-cap international later lost his place, but went on to make 77 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils before a long career at Everton.
