TikToker reveals what dimples actually are – and people get upset when they find out the truth
- Vlogger Hank Green responded to a TikToker asking ‘what is this thing’
A TikToker has offered an explanation of why people get dimples on their chins, but some were upset when they heard the description.
Vlogger Hank Green responded to a social media user who asked “what is this thing” while sharing a photo of his dimples on his chin.
Mr Green said they are caused by the mentalis muscle which connects from bone to skin and creates dimples in your skin when you bend it.
“You can see the mentalis here, doing something absolutely wild, putting all its little muscle fibers into your skin,” he added, sharing an image of the muscle.
“When you contract that muscle, it contracts. It pulls on the skin and makes those little dimples.

“You can see the mentalis here, doing something absolutely wild, putting all its little muscle fibers into your skin,” said Mr Green
‘It’s a bit weird. We are all made of flesh.’
But readers seemed disturbed by the explanation.
One thanked Mr. Green, but added, “Never speak of this again.”
Another said, “This makes me sick.”
And a third commented, “I’m so upset that I now know this information.”
According to a reader LadBibleeven went so far as to say, “I’m sorry, but I REALLY hate knowing this and it will haunt me for a long time.”
A description on Aesthetic life medical spa says, ‘Dimples in the chin occur because some of us naturally contract our chins more than others when opening and closing our mouths.
“It develops when the mentalis muscle, which inserts into the dermis of this area with several fibers, contracts.”
