Detroit Tigers star Javier Báez is providing much-needed relief to his native Puerto Rico by offering free meals to residents affected by Hurricane Fiona.

Báez announced his goodwill gesture on his Instagram account Monday, indicating that anyone interested was open to visiting his restaurant in Toa Baja, north of his hometown of Bayamón.

“I know we’re going through something super difficult, I feel for you,” said Báez. All those families in need of a warm plate of food can drop by @taquizapr Toa Baja and we’ll serve it for FREE!! If your community is affected and you need hot food, you can call 787-665-2323 (Joshua) or drop by @taquizapr and we’ll make the arrangements. Blessings to ALL.’

Báez’s brother-in-law, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher José Berríos, also shared the post, saying tacos were being distributed to those in need.

Hurricane Fiona hit some parts of the Caribbean island on Sunday with strong winds and almost 30 centimeters of rain. It laid out the electricity to more than 837,000 customers and left more than 1 million without clean water in the US territory, which is home to 3.2 million people.

The powerful storm devastated sidewalks and roads, ripped off roofs and caused water to flood into homes. It also removed a bridge and flooded two major airports.

A 56-year-old man who slipped and fell into the La Plata River was the only victim reported by authorities in Puerto Rico. The hurricane also killed a 68-year-old man and a young woman in the Dominican Republic on Monday.

Governor Pedro Pierluisi declined to say how long it would take to fully restore electricity for more than 837,000 customers, but said most would have power in “a matter of days.”

Since the storm started, National Guard troops have rescued more than 900 people, General José Reyes told a news conference.

US President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency as the eye of the storm approached the southwest corner of the island.

The system hit Puerto Rico on the anniversary of Hurricane Hugo, which hit the island as a Category 3 storm in 1989.

The island is still recovering from Hurricane Maria, which killed nearly 3,000 people in 2017 and destroyed the power grid.
