Tiger Woods is criticized as ‘misogynistic’, ‘deaf’ and ‘disrespectful’ by women’s empowerment group as backlash continues for giving Justin Thomas a tampon at Genesis Invitational
Tiger Woods faced a barrage of criticism and has now outraged a group of women, following a prank between him and Justin Thomas, in which he gave his friend a tampon.
The 15-time Grand Slam champion edged Thomas on the ninth hole at the Genesis Invitational, his first PGA Tour event in seven months, and summarily passed him a tampon as a prank.
Many have flooded social media defending Woods’ gesture as nothing more than an inside joke between the couple.
While others were quick to criticize the act, with one female empowerment group predictably outraged by the public act.
“Tiger’s tampon moment was not only misogynistic, but deaf and disrespectful to women and girls around the world,” Kara Sugar, executive director of the Women’s Global Empowerment Fund, said via TMZ.
The 15-time major winner cheekily handed Thomas a tampon during the first round in CA.
She then asked if he was hinting that “periods are embarrassing or embarrassing or a sign of weakness.”
Woods offered an apology after the furore at a news conference on Friday.
“It was all supposed to be fun and games,” he said, “but obviously it hasn’t turned out that way and if I offended anyone, that wasn’t the case.”
‘They were just friends having fun. Like I said, if I offended anyone in any way, shape or form, I’m sorry. It wasn’t meant to be that way.
“We play pranks on each other all the time and virally, I think it didn’t look that way, but between us it was different.”
Golf influencer Paige Spiranac has jumped to Woods’ defense amid anger directed at the 47-year-old, speaking of the ‘hypocrisy’ of certain women.
Both Woods and Thomas saw the funny side of the joke, which came after he bested the latter.
Paige Spiranac took to Twitter to defend Tiger Woods amid backlash to his tampon prank
Spiranac posted his initial defense of Woods saying he shouldn’t be canceled
‘If anyone tries to cancel Tiger over this, we’ll riot. It’s funny,” Spiranac wrote on Twitter on Thursday.
“It’s interesting to see women outraged that Tiger put JT in a tampon after he wore it, but I’ll be quickly shot down by those same women for how I’ve decided to build my business.” You can’t choose when to be a feminist.
In response to another tweet, Spiranac added: “Women say sexist things to men (and other women) all the time, but are too self-involved to see the hypocrisy.”
The influencer highlighted a “hypocrisy” behind some who had criticized Tiger Woods
