Ticket scalpers dealt a blow as Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour given major event status in Victoria

Scalpers hoping to make a significant profit on tickets to Taylor Swift’s 2024 The Eras Tour in Australia have been dealt a major blow.

On Tuesday, Major Events Secretary Steve Dimopoulos declared major event status for the American pop star’s February performances at the MCG.

That means anyone who sells tickets for more than 10 percent of face value for the shows in Victoria will face hefty fines.

Those who break the law risk fines ranging from $925 to as much as $555,000.

“By protecting our major events from ticket buyers, we ensure fans have the best possible chance of seeing their music idols,” Dimopoulos said in a statement.

“Our message to ticket buyers is clear: Don’t sell Taylor Swift tickets at high prices or you’ll be fined.”

It comes after tickets for the performances became available on resale sites, reaching a whopping $5890 each.

The website Viagogo had seats for the Sydney and Melbourne shows for up to $2,700 each on Monday.

A search for available tickets for the American pop star’s performances at the MCG in Melbourne can be found for $2459 and $2718.

Tickets for the Sydney dates at the Accor Arena are available for between $1979 and $2212.

Tickets for Taylor Swift’s 2024 The Eras Tour in Australia are already available through sales sites

Base tickets for Taylor Swift’s shows went on pre-sale Monday from official sellers for between $80 and $380 — and have already sold out.

The VIP packages came in at between $350 and $1,249 and include merchandise such as tote bags and posters, and also sold out in yesterday’s pre-sale.

It is illegal to resell event tickets for profit in NSW, and in Victoria it is an offense to resell event tickets for more than 10 percent over face value.

The Australian Federal Court ruled in 2019 that Viagogo had violated Australian consumer law on multiple counts related to misleading the public in reselling tickets.
