Three people are dead and a man has been rushed to hospital after a horror crash on one of Australia’s busiest highways.

Three vehicles were involved in the accident on the Bruce Highway near Federal on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast shortly after 4am on Friday, which closed all southbound lanes near exit 244.

Police have confirmed that three people were killed and a vehicle allegedly stolen from Gympie hours earlier was involved in the accident.

A man in his thirties with a head injury was taken to Gympie Hospital in stable condition.

One of the vehicles involved would have been stolen hours earlier on Thursday afternoon at Gympie, where a woman was threatened by a man with a knife.

The woman’s three children were also in the car at the time.

Photos of the scene of the accident show debris scattered across the road.

All southbound lanes of the Bruce Highway are expected to remain closed for at least several hours.

The road is completely blocked and motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible. Diversions will be put in place, police said.

The Forensic Crash Unit has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
