Thomas Tuchel reportedly met with new Man United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe last week over the potential replacement of manager Erik ten Hag, outlining plans for what he would do if he became the club’s new head coach .
United are currently assessing Ten Hag’s position at the club after a miserable season up to the FA Cup final victory over Man City.
Although Ten Hag have continually strived to mitigate a debilitating injury build-up when it came to United, they still performed below expected standards.
An eighth-place finish in the Premier League was their lowest in 34 years and they finished with a negative goal difference – something that was completely unthinkable a few years ago.
Their European campaign was a complete failure and if Ten Hag had not ultimately found salvation in winning the FA Cup, the debate over whether he should be sacked would have been settled.
Thomas Tuchel is said to have met with Man United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe last week
Ratcliffe is currently conducting an end-of-season review that will determine Erik ten Hag’s fate
And BILD journalist Christian Falk has now confirmed that Ratcliffe recently met in person with Thomas Tuchel.
Falk wrote on Twitter: ‘Last Tuesday there was a meeting in Monaco between Thomas Tuchel and the new Manchester United shareholder Jim Ratcliffe.
‘Tuchel announced his plans if he would take over the coaching position if Erik ten Hag were fired.
‘Tuchel is said to have explained to United’s co-owner how he could get United’s sporting problems, such as Sancho and Mason Mount, back on track.
‘Tuchel mentioned Antonio Rudiger as an example that in the past he had already succeeded in getting players with great potential back to the top.
Jadon Sancho’s future is up in the air after a successful six-month loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.
The England winger helped the German club reach the Champions League final after joining in January following a falling out with Ten Hag.
Mount never managed to get started after signing for £60 million last summer, with the attacking midfielder struggling with injuries.
Ten Hag’s position may have been saved by their FA Cup victory over Man City last month
Tuchel reportedly told Ratcliffe his plans if he became the club’s new manager
Ratcliffe has made a number of significant changes to transform the club off the pitch and there has been plenty of speculation in recent months that a similar change will take place in the dugout.
After United’s FA Cup win, a defiant Ten Hag said: ‘I don’t think about this. I’m in a project and we’re exactly where we want to be. We are on our way to building a team for the future.
‘There will be ups and downs. When I took over we were in a mess at United. The team is developing and ultimately it’s about winning trophies.
‘Two trophies in two years is not bad, three finals in two years is not bad. We must continue.
‘I’m not satisfied with it. We have to do better and if they don’t want me anymore then I’ll go somewhere else and win trophies because that’s what I’ve done my whole career.
‘I want to play the best football, I want to play dynamic football, attacking football. But at the end of the day you have to win matches and win trophies. That’s the mentality we’ve introduced.
‘We only had one chance: the FA Cup. I am very proud of the players and staff because they have done a fantastic job.”
