The first time the show introduces him, Murata is running away from battle, only to be caught by a demon. This side character is so forgettable that he doesn’t get brightly colored hair or even a middle name. He has no special powers, and his superiors often punish him. He’s just an average guy who happens to get caught up in the turmoil of several major battles.
But none of that matters, because fans of the Demon slayer anime has unofficially named Murata as the series’ favorite and unofficial strongest character.
Let’s be clear: Murata isn’t all that powerful in the world of Demon slayer. He is a standard grunt in the Demon slayer corps and does not practice any special breathing techniques. But that has not damaged his reputation.
The idea that he’s the only average fighter among a bunch of seasoned fighters actually brings out the irony of the piece.
In a videoIn the joke, which has been viewed over 1.9 million times on TikTok, the creator posts text over a clip of Murata falling into Infinity Castle — a vast domain and home to the most powerful demon, Muzan. The text reads, “Muzan’s biggest mistake was putting Murata in the same radius as him.” In the comments, people voiced their support for the joke, with one person replying, “Muzan only goes out at night because Murata is asleep.” It has been liked over 22,000 times.
TikTok is full of videos making jokes similar to the one above, but the joke has only become more popular. Another video, which more than 3.6 million viewsmakes a joke about how the entire fandom agrees that Murata is the strongest.
Now, fans are expanding on the original joke and creating a fake but super-powerful fighting technique known only to Murata called “galaxy breathing.” The idea has become so popular that it’s a suggested search term in the comments.
This is not the first and probably not the last time that communal cheating has taken place Demon slayer community. This is the same fandom that started roasting each other during the live shows for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the movie: Mugen Trainfinally.
Luckily, this time everyone decided to leave reality out of the equation and elevate an average character to a godlike power.
