This monitor maker is taking on Apple with a great portable display that’s ideal for creators – and at a much lower price
Australian monitor manufacturer Espresso has professionals and makers in its sights with the unveiling of its latest high-resolution display.
The espresso 17 Pro promises to be an ultra-thin, ultra-portable 4K monitor for graphic design and more. The company even claimed to beat Apple in pixels per inch (PPI), with 257.6 PPI compared to the Apple retina display’s 227 PPI and the Apple Pro XDR display’s 245 PPI.
In the race for the best portable monitor at the market, Will Scuderi, co-founder and CEO said: “(the) espresso 17 Pro has been carefully designed to support professionals and creatives who need to perform at their best, wherever their work takes them, and whatever platforms they use. And, it seems, no matter which direction they work, with the ability to switch between landscape and portrait mode for a wider canvas.
What you need to know
If it lives up to its specs, the Espresso 17 Pro will be impressive monitor for photo editing on the go or secondary screen. In addition to the striking 4K resolution, it has a 17.3-inch LiveTouch screen with a 60 Hz refresh rate. Brightness reaches 450 nits, with the monitor further flexing its creative muscles with the ability to display over a billion colors, covering 100% DCI-P3 color space.
The monitor also offers improved pen support, with all-new custom touch drivers and more than 4,000 levels of pressure sensitivity. According to the Sydney-based company, this means the screen offers “smooth and seamless gesture control, precise pen commands and beautiful scrolling” with its own pen calibrated for e.g. Photoshopping, IllustratorFigma, and Kanva
The entire device weighs 1.1kg, measures 397mm x 245mm and is just 9mm thin. As expected of espresso displays, users can connect them to their computer via a single USB connection.
It remains to be seen whether the Espresso 17 Pro can truly compete with Apple’s maker-focused displays. But when we tested its predecessor, the 15-inch espressoDisplaywe were seriously impressed with the versatility of hybrid working and called it “our favorite portable monitor right now.” High praise indeed.
Shipping from late November, espresso’s latest offering is now available to pre-order as a standalone machine or as part of the Studio Bundle, including a power bank for laptopsstand, pen and pencil case.
I can’t wait for the release of the device, we’re talking October Prime Day portable monitor deals and upcoming Black Friday portable monitor deals.
