Pizza restaurant sales reached a record high of $46.9 billion in 2022 Statistical. In the first quarter of 2023, a survey found that pizza was the most ordered type of fast food in the United States and the most ordered type among all age groups.

In 1946, Buddy baked the pies in wrought steel pans borrowed from local auto factories.

“Influenced by Sicilian-style square pizzas, Detroit Style Pizza continues to impress pizza lovers for its unique layering structure and stunning presentation,” according to the restaurant’s website.

‘This style turns traditional pizza on its head by starting with a double-risen dough that fits perfectly into a square pan – a process that allows the dough to rise and stretch twice – followed by applying the toppings backwards.’

The toppings are placed directly on the dough and then covered with a Wisconsin rock cheese mixture made especially for Buddy’s.

According to the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin‘Young stone cheese is wonderfully mild with just a tiny bit of nuttiness. Give it some time to mature, though, and it meanders into more complex, edgier, and even spicier territory.”

Finally, three stripes of sauce are wiped over the pizza before it is placed in the oven to bake.

“We get a lot of people from out of town who come specifically to eat Detroit-style pizza. I would say the vast majority of responses have been very positive,” Damaske said.

Motown-style pizzas can be found all over the country and have earned their place as a top pizza destination.
