This Christmas season, give yourself the soothing gift of banter and a good resin model video
Holidays involve a lot of family talk. Whether you’ve taken the necessary planes, trains and cars to be with your loved ones, or you’re celebrating from a distance, there’s often a parade of family updates – the welcome calls that inevitably (and gratifying!) reports and the check-ins ins. Some of us come from divorced homes and are well versed in the art of such calls, so please take some wisdom from me.
First, I recommend having a few anecdotes or topics ready. You’ll need to be in the flow of the conversation, but the gaping openness of even a simple “So what’s wrong with you?” can quickly overwhelm even a seasoned conversationalist if you’re not ready.
The following may be controversial, but I think it’s crucial: have a task! Browse around, tidy up, do the dishes, take a walk, sit and do crafts – whatever. We’re looking for something that your brain can do in the background so that you can focus on the conversation and, conversely, really give it your all. I have been known to clean an entire house or two in my day just to catch up with people. But a personal favorite while I’m still at it is watching craft videos, especially resin makers.
These videos have the advantage of being silent, save for a creepy soundtrack that you can mute while you’re on the phone, but with some complicated, procedural crafting. It’s something I’m fascinated by, to the extent that it almost overwhelms my innate sense that I could never be suited to this type of work. It’s fascinating and incredible. Each step is its own skill, and each step gives way to this remarkable whole. Personally, I made several long phone calls last year trying to destroy my YouTube algorithm by watching Minibricks Canalwhich I thought had a great mix of artistry, humor and revelation. But the great thing about a long catch-up is that you get the chance to let the robots do their thing and take you on an adventure; once you complete one resin model, move on to the next. And before too long you will have overtaken all your loved ones and have a strong desire to buy a resin shark lamp.
