A clever mother shared how she easily kept a head of iceberg lettuce fresh and crispy in the refrigerator for ten days.

The woman simply wrapped the lettuce in aluminum foil to prevent it from spoiling and thus reduce both food waste and grocery bills.

Thousands were impressed with the simple hack, while others said they've been using it for years on lettuce and a variety of other fruits and vegetables.

Al foil can keep food fresh longer because it protects the food from bacteria and mold spores in the air and helps retain moisture so that the food does not dry out as quickly.

It also works well with food in the freezer as it is more airtight around the food.

The helpful post racked up nearly 4,000 likes and a string of appreciative comments.

“Must try this, my lettuce sometimes falls off before I use it,” said one member, and another wrote, “The only way to store lettuce.”

Others said they have used aluminum foil on other fresh produce such as celery, cucumber, peppers and scallions.

'To make it better, put a piece of paper towel to absorb the moisture. Makes it even better, I've been doing it for a long time,” one woman explained.

'I use paper towels, completely covered with an airtight plastic bag. Works really well and stays fresh for a few weeks,” another suggested.

'I wrap my lettuce in aluminum foil and also put the strawberries in airtight glass jars. They last for weeks and are as good as the day you buy them,” replied a third.

'Also, don't cut it with a knife unless absolutely necessary. That's what turns the edges brown. I never use a knife for my lettuce,” said a fourth.
