Artificial intelligence is used to cast its all-seeing eye over the written word with the latest version of DeepL free writing app Write.
Thrown like a rival’s Grammaticallythe AI writing tool can correct spelling and grammar mistakes, reword words and sentences, and generally make your writing clearer.
Developer DeepL, who first made waves with its AI-driven translation softwaresaid the tool uses “neural network technology that captures the context and nuances of the original text to provide suggestions for rephrasing and alternative word choices.”
Writing on the wall
Born as an idea to help its multilingual user base check the accuracy of their translations, the idea behind Write is to give users control over their writing.
Unlike ChatGPT’s essay-generating content, this AI is effectively a smart proofreader, though the company claimed that writers can “preserve their authentic voice” and creativity by making recommended changes to phrasing, tone, style, and word choice.
We gave Write a quick test drive. The interface is clean, with just two text fields and an option to switch languages. UK English, US English and German are supported at launch.
Text is pasted into the left field and the results appear on the right. Suggestions are marked in that known word processor way. Clicking on these links in the body will give you a few more options.
Speed was excellent – less than a second to check a single sentence; a few seconds to run his A-eye over a longer stretch (although after 2000 characters you get a prompt to buy DeepL Pro).
However, it’s not perfect. Like similar writing and writing improvement apps, suggested changes can feel flat, unemotional, and process-driven. As with any AI content, human refinement is usually necessary and always desirable.
