This 0.6-inch OLED TV is Christopher Nolan’s worst nightmare

From giant flat screen displays to wall-sized projectors, it’s fair to say that the quest for a movie theater experience at home has led many of us to overwhelm our living rooms. A KickStarter campaign takes a completely different tactic, however, as it appears to be crowdfunding a new OLED TV that’s less than an inch in size.
The TinyTV Mini, made by electronics company TinyCircuits, is a small retro TV that can be purchased for a while miniature asking price of $50 (opens in new tab) if you are willing to support the project. (through Flat panelsHD)
Essentially a portable media player with 8GB of onboard storage, the 0.64-inch TV is about the size of an SD card, making it just a little smaller than our usual pick of the best OLED TVs.
With a 64×64 pixel panel, the TinyTV Mini is somehow an even smaller version of the company’s TinyTV 2, which sports a relatively gargantuan 1-inch LCD IPS display, with a positive sharp Resolution of 216×135 pixels.
Both small TVs have a front-firing mono speaker, but with no audio output or HDMI output, unfortunately you can’t pair either with any of the models on our best soundbar list…
That also means playback is limited to video files on the built-in storage, with TinyCircuits including software for PC and Mac that can be used to compress clips for viewing on the TV, and add effects such as static and video looping .
The Mini is powered by a Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller and has a USB Type-C port for data transfer and charging. There’s also a built-in IR receiver for use with an optional remote – although those ridiculously small “channel” (for switching between video files), power and volume buttons on the top aren’t just for show, because they do actually not work.
Somewhat understandably, the diminutive size meanwhile means there’s only room for a weedy 50mAh (3.7V) battery, which will only give you about an hour of viewing before it runs out.
Both the TinyTV 2 and the TinyTV Mini are now available to turn on again Kickstarter for $49with TinyCircuits aiming for a shipping date of March 2023 for donors.
Opinion: Tiny TV is too cute not to leave behind
Considering that movie directors like Christopher Nolan and David Lynch already have strong feelings against people watching movies on their phones, you have to assume they won’t. love the idea that people are watching this TV. (Actually, Lynch, there’s a chance Lynch would totally wrap herself around it and love it…)
Keeping my daughter’s dollhouse residents entertained is about the extent of my justification for buying the TinyTV Mini, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting one.
With $227,780 pledged — well above the $15,000 goal set by TinyCircuits — and nearly 2,500 backers, I’m clearly not alone in enamored of a TV that’s sure to give me tired eyes.
