Two thieves tried to evade police in Verona, New Jersey, on Sunday by climbing over a guardrail and launching a 21-foot stolen vehicle.

The Verona Police Department responded to a request for assistance for a stolen vehicle from the North Caldwell Police Department shortly after midnight Sunday.

The car was found on the outskirts of Verona through a tracking system on Hilltop Drive. Officer McMahon, whose first name was not released, located the vehicle and called for backup.

When three officers approached the vehicle, they “attempted to flee the complex by driving off the road hitting several parked cars, eventually driving over a retaining wall and falling 21 feet.”

Body camera footage shows the white SUV pulling out of the driveway, tires screeching, as it crashed through the thin guardrail and plunged off the cliff.

As it fell down the hill, the car landed on its face before rolling onto its top and hitting the house below.

Photos released by the two departments show the car with the entire front bumper torn off.

The crash caused property damage to the home’s balcony and damaged one of the owner’s cars.

The driver, who was not identified, escaped the accident and fled on foot, but was later apprehended. The female passenger was found near the wreckage and taken into the custody of North Caldwell Police.

Both were taken to the hospital for medical evaluations.

The two police departments are now advising residents to “lock your vehicles and remove your key fob.”

“This video is an example of how brazen and reckless these car thieves are to avoid arrest,” the joint statement read.
