Phil Foden shocked several Manchester City fans when he was asked to name his ultimate Premier League XI.

The 23-year-old, who has been in the form of his life this season, has scored 22 goals in all competitions as Pep Guardiola’s side bid to become the first ever club to win four consecutive top-flight titles in England.

With the business end of the campaign approaching and the European Championship in sight, Foden sits down with Mail Sport Football editor Ian Ladyman to discuss his rise to the top of the sport.

As well as discussing the title challenge and explaining why he wears the number 47, Foden also named an all-time Premier League XI that has raised more than a few eyebrows online.

Starting with his all-important back line, Foden started by mentioning current City goalkeeper Ederson, before deploying Kyle Walker at right-back.

“But I’m serious, I don’t see another right-back,” he insisted.

At the heart of the defence, Foden placed City legend Vincent Kompany alongside current title rival Virgil van Dijk, while former Arsenal and Chelsea star Ashley Cole completed the back four.

Anchoring the midfield, Foden’s side included four-time Premier League winner David Silva along with former Arsenal talisman Patrick Vieira: ‘I feel like [Silva] needs that protection, so it’s a good balance,” he reasoned.

The midfield combination left no room for current City captain Kevin De Bruyne, although Foden previously noted he had ‘never seen anything’ like the Belgian on the pitch.

Leaving De Bruyne from his fantasy XI proved to be a controversial decision among City fans on social media.

One wrote: ‘KDB Foden doesn’t just have to sit on the bench for the next match for this’

Another agreed: ‘Replace every midfielder with kdb and Ederson with a good gk and he is perfect’

Ex-Manchester United stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney were both named in the XI

Another fan added: ‘It’s calm down people, he didn’t put the KDB because he represented David, it’s all good’

Cristiano Ronaldo was also named in the star-studded squad, with Thierry Henry moving wide on the right wing to accommodate two centre-forwards.

Sergio Aguero, who led the attack, was the seventh City alumni named in the team, with Wayne Rooney joining the Argentine up front.
