Thierry Henry has finally been unveiled as France’s new U21 head coach and has admitted the decision to take the role was motivated by him remaining ‘unfulfilled’ in his pundit role.

Since retiring from a glorious playing career nine years ago, the Arsenal legend has transitioned between acquiring his managerial credentials as a coach and becoming one of football’s most beloved television pundits.

Now he has decided to refocus on excelling in the dugout and is tasked with growing into the next generation of French talent. Quite a job for a team that has made it to the last two World Cup finals and won one.

During his unveiling on Tuesday at the headquarters of the French Football Federation, Henry explained that his desire to get back on the pitch was greater than his passion for appearing on screen.

The 46-year-old Frenchman explained: “I was not satisfied, I like the pitch and to help people learn and understand things.

“You simply don’t refuse the French national team. I like working with young players and it was nothing but a plus to add to my life.

“I had a life and lived well, but I was missing a part of my life that fascinated me so much,” he added.

He will remain in charge of the team until 2025 and will make his debut against Denmark on September 7, before France take on Slovenia in the European Championship qualifiers four days later.

Henry is a French legend who has played 123 games, scored 51 goals and won the 1998 World Cup in Paris.

However, his return as coach comes at a time when the country’s former star striker is trying to rebuild after previous difficult managerial spells.

The country’s second all-time top goalscorer previously coached Arsenal’s youth sides before taking on the lead role in Monaco, remaining in the post for just 20 games.

He endured a similar stint in charge of Canada’s professional team Montreal before eventually acting as Roberto Martinez’s assistant manager with the Belgium national team in two separate stints.

Meanwhile, he has also garnered new support as a television presenter working on the Premier League, Champions League and other competitions across Europe.
