These are the four breeds first time dog owners should NOT have – but is yours on the list?

A UK vet has named four breeds he wouldn’t recommend for first-time dog owners.

In addition to his work as a veterinarian, Ben the Vet makes videos on TikTok, where he has about 210,000 followers.

In a recent clip, he shared the four breeds he says he wouldn’t recommend as a first dog, explaining that his opinions were based on his nine years in practice, during which time he’s met thousands of people and their dogs.

Ben, who often shares videos about animal welfare practices, indicated in the clip that the information he shared was his opinion and that he was ā€œtalking about breeds that aren’t necessarily the best option.ā€

Ben said in the clip that the first dog on his list was the Border Collie. He explained: ‘Now these dogs do best in a working environment, but if you put them in a regular house they can get really bored.

‘That boredom can manifest itself in all kinds of problem behavior, destructive behavior.’

These, he continued, include things like “digging, barking, excessive compulsive behaviors such as chasing their tails, [and] signs of aggression

Ben concluded, ā€œIf you’ve never had a dog before and don’t really know what to expect, it’s quite a challenge dealing with them.ā€

The second breed on his list was the beagle. According to the vet, “This is going to surprise a lot of people, but the reason I included them is because they are quite a difficult breed of dog to train.

“They tend to be quite stubborn, and as a hunting dog they follow their nose. So they are always on their toes.”

Moreover, he added, they have ā€œa bit of a reputation as being kind of an escape artist.ā€

Ben concluded: ‘So you absolutely have to have a secure yard if you have a beagle, and it can be quite tricky to teach them to come back. So [if you have a ] “If you have a beagle, you might not be able to let him run free.”

He moved on to the third breed on his list and revealed it was the Dalmatian. The vet explained, ā€œNow in the 90s, after a re-release of the Disney cartoon 101 Dalmatians, they have become extremely popular.

‘Over the next 10 years, their popularity plummeted 97 percent, and that’s because the people who were buying Dalmatians because they were so cute, and they were so well-trained in the movies… then realized that this dog is actually a handful, and those people stopped buying Dalmatians. And a lot of those people would have been first-time dog owners.’

The fourth and final breed on Ben’s list was the husky. “Now getting a dog is a big commitment and it’s life changing, but getting a husky is a whole new level, and they need a lot of exercise,” Ben explained.

He added that these dogs were bred to pull sleds “over long distances in cold weather.”

This means that if you place them in a home where they are left alone for long periods of time and are only let out for half an hour once a day, they will become overweight, bored and difficult to handle.
