There’s now an official ChatGPT API for businesses to join the fun

Businesses will soon be able to get their hands on ChatGPT after the increasingly popular AI service unveiled new APIs designed specifically for businesses.
Now that OpenAI, the company behind the AI chatbot, has proven consumers’ willingness to use artificial intelligence to such an extent, it has turned its attention to monetizing its large language model-trained tool.
The company recently launched a trial membership for $20 a month, which allows paying users to access the service even during peak hours where free users would otherwise be locked out, among other small perks — and has now introduced an enterprise-focused add-on offering. .
ChatGPT for Business
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman explained TechCrunch (opens in new tab) that the same GPT-3.5 model underpins the API intended for businesses, but in a slightly modified format called gpt-3.5-turbo. This enables more frequent updates to prevent unwanted ChatGPT behavior and to better tailor the AI tool to business needs.
The API could also power non-chat applications, and Snap, Quizlet, Instacart, and Shopify have all committed to the technology.
It is priced at $0.002 per 1,000 tokens, or about 750 words, which will somewhat cover the service’s monthly operating costs, which run into the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars. CEO Sam Altman has previously called the company’s running costs “dazzling,” with chats alone accounting for several cents in computing costs.
Brockman added that companies can share prompts like “answer truthfully and in a nice way” on top of user input to help compile better answers.
Since ChatGPT launched in public preview format in November 2022, it has accumulated millions of monthly active users and garnered an astonishing amount of attention.
OpenAI’s LLM tool has an almost unlimited number of uses, and in addition to this API that can be used by companies, we’ve already seen its integration into a number of Microsoft products. So it’s clear that we’re likely to see small snippets of the technology in services we’re already familiar with, rather than heading directly to the ChatGPT website.
