Notorious domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski, aka the “Unabomber,” has died in federal prison, a Bureau of Prisons spokesman said Saturday.

Kaczynski was found dead around 8 a.m. in a North Carolina federal prison. A cause of death was not immediately known.

He had been transferred to the North Carolina Federal Penitentiary Medical Facility after serving 20 years in a Colorado federal Supermax prison for a series of bombings of scientists.

Kaczynski was serving life without the possibility of parole after his 1996 arrest at the primitive cabin where he lived in western Montana. He pleaded guilty to causing 16 explosions that killed three people and injured 23 others in various parts of the country between 1978 and 1995.
