His girlfriend, photographer Mary Ann Halpin, revealed the tragic news on Facebook.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must say goodbye to my dear friend Brett Hadley,” Halpin wrote.

“We were in an acting class and were the bad kids in the class. We sat in the back and giggled. I remember when we were in his covering WV… I will miss his playful and deep conversations, his funny flirty giggles and twinkling eyes. He took his final bow and left us gracefully yesterday.’

He made his debut as the patriarch of the Williams family in 1980 and remained on the show until 1991, but his character lived on.

After his departure, Carl continued to be mentioned on the show, often said by other characters to be “in the other room.”

In 1998, Hadley returned to the show and reprized the role, as it was explained that Carl had suffered amnesia after being badly beaten during a seizure.

His character Carl had started a new life under the identity of Jim Bradley and no longer remembered the family he had left behind.
