The New York Yankees appeared to be in vacation mode playing their game against the San Diego Padres as the team gave up two colossal fouls to allow a little-league homer.
With eight-hole batter Jose Azocar batting and Ha-Seong Kim second, Yankees starter Gerrit Cole tapped the rubber in the top of the second inning as the game was tied.
But two mental errors by the Yankees’ fielders allowed both runs to be scored when Azocar singled to center.
Midfielder Harrison Bader attacked the ball and threw it home to prevent Kim from going over the plate.
Bader, however, put too much on his pitch and sailed it high and far over the head of catcher Kyle Higashioka.
The Yankees gave up a minor league home run, starting with this pitch from Harrison Bader
Bader’s pitch went over catcher Kyle Higashioka’s head as pitcher Gerrit Cole stood on the mound, unwilling to help his catcher as the game unraveled before his very eyes.
Higashioka’s throw then sailed too far from third base, enabling Jose Azocar to score
With Azocar in second on his way to third, Higashioka looked for a chance to come out cheap and finish the inning there.
However, he also made a throwing error and sent his throw way too high and way too left of third baseman DJ LeMahieu.
All told, San Diego got the bases empty and took a 3–1 lead over the Yankees at home.
The whole time Cole stood there doing nothing to support his catcher during the play as he watched it all happen without reacting.
Fans on social media were left in agony as they watched their beloved Pinstripes make serious blunders.
“That might be the worst defensive play I’ve ever seen in my life. Shameful,” said one Twitter user.
Another wondered, “I can’t really say what the worst part of this was. 1) Bader’s throw 2) Higgy’s throw 3) Cole doesn’t stop at anything and just sits there pouting.’
“A simple single turns into a minor league home run,” wrote another. ‘How embarrassing.’
Yankees fans and baseball enthusiasts laughed at New York for their string of blunders
But the Yankees got back into the game and beat San Diego 10-7 on that day
But all was not doom and gloom for the Bronx Bombers this game – and by the next inning, they had turned things around.
The Yankees responded by scoring seven consecutive runs off Padres starter Yu Darvish and reliever Drew Carlton to end the third inning 8-3.
New York didn’t stop there, hit a home run and put down another runner in the bottom of the eighth to put ten runs on the board – and went on to win 10-7.
With that win, the Yankees move to 32-23 on the year, seven games behind the lead in the AL East and well within an AL Wild Card spot.
They headed west for a seven-day road trip. New York plays three games against the Seattle Mariners and then three against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
