The Xbox handheld will reportedly be unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase, alongside a first-party shadow drop
It’s being reported that a dedicated Xbox handheld console could be announced at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase.
The showcase, which airs on June 9, will include the usual updates on upcoming Xbox games and will likely debut some new titles. However, as reported by Real performancea YouTube video of notable leaking eXtas1s claims that a brand new Xbox handheld will be unveiled during the showcase.
The video is in Spanish, but a translation has been made on the website Subreddit ‘GamingLeaksAndRumours’ and states that a “teaser about the new Xbox Portable” will be revealed during the showcase. Obviously take this with a grain of salt, but if the information is correct, ‘teaser’ implies that we’ll only get a short snippet of the device during this showcase.
The video also states that there will be a shadow drop of a first-party Xbox Game Studios title after the showcase airs. That means a major Xbox title could be released on the same day. Likely candidates are here Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024Tower mounted, or potential State of disrepair 3 (although we have yet to see a bit of gameplay from the Undead Labs-developed sequel). Starfield DLC is also a possibility.
As for the handheld, if it is indeed real, it’s difficult to speculate on what form it might take. Of course, an Xbox handheld could make a great portable Xbox Game Pass machine, although its value depends on whether or not players can download games natively or are stuck with cloud streaming.
I find the latter a turn-off, especially considering that players can get a similar experience on their phone with Xbox Cloud Gaming and a controller like the Backbone One or the Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra. Still, we’ll know for sure in a few days, on June 9, as long as the leaks are true.
