The writer of Happy Death Day gives Valentine’s Day the slasher it deserves
I don’t want to say anything too soon, but it’s entirely possible that we’re on the cusp of a new golden age of holiday-themed horror movies. The past few years we have had the Christmas set Scarer 3; J2Kthat focuses on a very specific New Year; and Eli Roth’s surprisingly fun, and not surprisingly gory, Thanksgiving — not to mention all the horror movies set on Halloween that seem too easy to count. The latest addition is (hopefully) Heart eyesa new Valentine’s Day slasher, which got a new trailer on Tuesday.
Heart eyes is all about a serial killer who wears a mask with LED hearts for eyes, and kills couples every Valentine’s Day. The trailer is light on plot details, but it seems likely that this is a film whose premise is self-explanatory: a couple (Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding) will be chased by the titular killer, and a lot of people will be too. will be murdered, and that’s probably all we really need to know.
What adds to the hope that this film could be better than just a holiday gimmick is the exciting creative team behind it. Heart eyes is written and produced by Christopher Landon, the writer and director of the Happy Death Day films, and directed by Josh Ruben, who previously directed Werewolves insideand is a frequent guest star in Dropout series such as Make some noise.
Heart eyes will be released in theaters on February 7.
