The world’s most expensive number plate sells for £12MILLION!

The most expensive number plate in the world sells for £12MILLION! Driver spends staggering amount on license plate ‘7’ at auction in Dubai – breaking previous record

There are plenty of drivers in the UK who would love a personalized number plate.

British motorists spend millions of pounds on them every year and the Treasury has collected billions from private plate sales since their inception.

But one driver has just wiped out the highest amount paid for a car, splashing an incredible £12 million on a very special Dubai badge.

The ‘7’ record sold at a charity auction in Dubai this weekend for a record Dirham 55 million – that’s about £5 million more than the previous record since 2008.

How many? An anonymous bidder poured a massive £12 million into the ‘7’ license plate in Dubai during a charity auction on Saturday. It has shipped a new world record for the amount paid for a private record

Emirates Auction sold the board at the ‘Most Noble Numbers’ charity event held in Dubai on Saturday.

The ‘P – 7’ plate – which simply reads ‘7’ in Dubai – paid the 52.2 million dirhams paid in 2008 for the ‘5 – 1’ (which is shown as ‘1’ in the city ) license plate, which worked out to £7.2 million at the time.

That previous record amount was paid by Dubai businessman Saeed Abdul Ghaffar Khouri and has been used on his Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Mercedes G-Wagen.

However, the identity of Saturday’s winning bidder has been kept anonymous.

Unless the buyer has placed an order for a £20 million Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, the world’s most expensive new car, chances are their latest purchase will cost more than the vehicle it’s attached to.

However, the record £12 million is nothing compared to the highest amount paid for a car at auction.

That mind-boggling figure was reached last year when an exceptionally rare 1955 Mercedes SLR 300 Uhlenhaut Coupé was sold at a top-secret auction in Germany for a world record £115 million.

Since ‘7’ is considered lucky in many cultures around the world, this isn’t the first time a driver has put a huge sum on a plate with that number.

In 2016, a ‘7’ number plate was sold in the United Arab Emirates for £2.96 million.

That same record had changed hands for £3 million just six years earlier.

During the weekend sale, ‘P – 7’ now tops the global chart, with nine of the ten highest record prices paid for records, all in the UAE.

The 'P - 7' plate - which is simply read as '7' in Dubai - has eclipsed the 52.2 million Dirham paid for the '5 - 1' (which is rendered as '1') number plate in 2008 . time at about £7.2 million

The charity auction was part of the ‘1 Billion Meals Endowment’ campaign launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to establish the largest sustainable food aid fund for Ramadan .

In total, approximately £20.9 million was raised from the sale of a number of ‘special vehicle plates’.

Abdulla Matar Almannaei, Chairman of Emirates Auction, said after the auction: ‘Breaking world records is always exciting, but breaking a world record while making a difference in people’s lives is truly invaluable.

“Selling the P-7 license plate for $15 million [£12million] at the Most Noble Numbers charity auction is a testament to our bidders’ generosity and dedication to supporting the 1 Billion Meals Endowment campaign.

“We at Emirates Auction are proud to have played a part in this achievement and we look forward to continuing our support for charities through innovative auction events.”

The record amount surpassed the highest amounts paid for private records in the UK.

The currently known largest amount paid out was in 2014 when a buyer spent £518,480 on plate ’25 0′.

Since '7' is considered lucky in many cultures around the world, this isn't the first time a driver has split a huge sum on a license plate with that number.
