The World Cup final pushed Google Search to its highest traffic ever

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced that the search engine has broken all previous records during the FIFA World Cup Final on December 18, 2022. described (opens in new tab) as “one of the best games ever.”

In a tweet (opens in new tab) the next day, Pichai commented, “Search recorded its highest traffic ever in 25 years during the #FIFAWorldCup finals, it was like the whole world was searching for one thing!”

The company rolled out a handful of new features ahead of the opening game to solidify its position as a go-to source of up-to-date information by making tweaks to the “World Cup” search results.

It’s made even easier to find a list of upcoming matches and relevant information, and mobile users can customize notifications for any number of participating countries.

Google isn’t the only company to see high volumes during the World Cup final; Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced this in a Tweet (opens in new tab) that a goal from France caused the platform to process a record 24,400 tweets per second.

According to a Twitter blog article (opens in new tab)there were 147 billion impressions of the #WC2022 hashtag worldwide, surpassing the #WC2018 figures and more than doubling that of the #Tokyo2020 Olympics.

The two most popular games, measured in Tweets per minute, were Argentina v France and Croatia v Brazil occupying the top five, with Messi sparking the most conversations on the social media platform.

Pichai and Musk aren’t the only execs to publicly express their excitement at the finale — Apple CEO, Tim Cook, also took part in Twitter (opens in new tab) to describe it as “one of the best games I’ve ever seen.”

Google and Twitter’s willingness to adapt and cater to fans has undoubtedly helped keep the platforms among the top performers for global events like the World Cup.
