Rick Grimes risked everything to try to help his wife Michonne escape the clutches of the Civic Republic Military on Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.
“To get away, it takes someone inside,” Rick (Andrew Lincoln) told his wife. “That’s me for you.”
The episode of the spin-off series titled Bye began after Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) reunited six years after the bridge explosion that separated them. It started with a flashback of Rick encountering Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), who brought him to the CRM after saving him.
“You’ve taken me somewhere I can’t leave,” Rick told her.
Jadis tried to convince Rick that the CRM was a great place to live.

“I’m going home,” Rick said.
“Follow your bliss, Rick,” Jadis said. “But I did save your life, that’s what happened.”
The show flashed back to the present, with Jadis telling Rick that if he tried to leave the CRM, she would come after him and kill everyone he ever loved. Jadis told him that he had to live a life with Michonne within the CRM.
Jadis also told Rick that if he killed her, she had a file on him that would be released and the CRM would kill everyone he loved.
Meanwhile, Michonne, who hid her identity and went by the name Dana, worked on the front lines clearing out zombies.
Beale (Terry O’Quinn), the Major General of the Civic Republic Military (CRM), held a funeral for Donald Okafor (Craig Tate), the CRM Lieutenant Colonel, who was killed in action. Beale then told Pearl Thorne (Lesley-Ann Brandt) to speak to her privately.
Later, Pearl returned and told Rick that Beale had promoted her to commander.
“He told me everything,” Thorne said. “He gave me the full briefing.”

The episode opened with a flashback of Rick encountering Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), who took him to the CRM after saving him.

“The Echelon briefing,” Rick said.
“I need you to take over the logistics,” Pearl said. “They are accelerating the schedule and there is still a lot to be done before the commanders arrive for the opening summit.”
Pearl told him that all commanders would be present at the meeting. She also said Beale asked about “Dana” and didn’t want her to pull her down.
“You didn’t hear what I heard,” Pearl said. ‘You didn’t see what I saw. You will.’
After she left, Rick pulled out a map and other supplies he had hidden in his room.
Later, Rick secretly gave Michonne a note outside saying “This is it, tonight we have to act quickly.”
The note sent Michonne to a locker where he had hidden a key to get out of the building and told her to follow the map.
“I love you,” Rick said in the note.
Jadis also told Rick that if he killed her, she had a file on him that would be released and the CRM would kill everyone he loved.

Rick left Michonne with Beale’s treasured historical sword to use to escape into the locker. Rick cleared the zombies for her outside the city walls so she could reach a river. He had hidden a red canoe for their escape, but by the time Michonne got there, Rick was gone. Instead, he left a note.
“I’m not coming,” Rick’s note said. “And if you don’t go, you’ll never get away and we’ll both die here.” The only way to get you back to Judith is for me to stay here just to be sure. I will always love you. If you love me, you’ll go.’
The next day, Rick told Jadis that Michonne was gone. He said he knew he had to get her away so he could stay in the CRM.
“She really left without you?” Jadis said.
“She didn’t know she was leaving without me,” Rick said.
Jadis asked him if he still wanted to kill her. Rick told her that their fates were tied and how he had dressed up a dead walker to look like Michonne.
“Just make sure you participate in the study,” Rick said.
“I’ll make sure I’m informed if Dana leaves, but if it rains, I haven’t,” Jadis said.

Pearl called Rick to the garden. Rick was stunned to see that Michonne had returned and was back to work killing zombies. Rick took Michonne aside so they could talk, but Michonne said nothing and walked away.
Later, Michonne went into town to walk around on her day off. Michonne came across a man who had previously drawn her and Judith on the old phones she had with her. The man told him that Rick’s late son Carl had asked him to make the drawings and their conversation gave her renewed hope.
Pearl called for Rick and ‘Dana’ to confront them. Pearl asked ‘Dana’ to tell her who she really was.
“I’ll let you in on a secret,” Pearl said. “You’re here because of me. People like you are not allowed in. You are a leader, what we call an ‘A’.
Pearl grabbed her knife behind her back and told ‘Dana’ that if she lived in the city, she would try to seek justice. Pearl said she could give her a way to get answers.
“An opportunity that very few get, very few in the entirety of this force, very few in the world,” Pearl said.
Rick pulled out his gun.
“I’d say yes,” Michonne said.

Pearl put her knife back and told Rick to equip Michonne and that they should join her on a mission. Rick told Pearl that she did a good job recruiting her.
“I’m not responsible for a vulnerability,” Pearl said.
The three of them then flew in a helicopter to the Cascadia Forward Operating Base. Once they landed, Pearl told them that they had a breach in the facility and 200 zombies were coming towards them.
“We’re going to move the deltas ourselves,” Pearl said.
Pearl pushed a device into the field while Michonne and Rick helped clean up the dead. When Pearl secured the car, Michonne took over and pushed the cart containing the device through the woods. Rick activated the device, which attracted the zombies to it, and then it exploded. Rick and Michonne ran to a tree and kissed.
“Come on,” Michonne said.
“They’ll find us,” Rick said.
“We’ll make sure they can’t,” Michonne said.

As Michonne killed zombies, Pearl raised her gun to kill her, but Rick stood in her way.
“She went rogue and you followed,” Pearl later told Rick. ‘I trusted her. I stick my neck out for her. I regret it.’
“Don’t do that,” Rik said. “Maybe it was too early for her.”
“We have to take care of this,” Pearl said.
Back at the base, Pearl told Rick that he was on his way up and that General Beale wanted to brief him. Michonne then saw Rick talking to Jadis.
“It doesn’t matter,” Rick said. “You’re going back to base right now, and I’ll get you out of here if I have to knock you out and put you on that damn boat myself.”
As Michonne killed zombies, Pearl raised her gun to kill her, but Rick stood in her way

During a rainstorm, they took a helicopter back to CRM headquarters.
In the final moments, Michonne grabbed Rick and pulled him along as they both fell from the helicopter.
“Shoto, it’s Daito,” Michonne said, using nicknames for himself and their daughter Judith. “I don’t know if we’ll be back.”
