The Voice: John Legend gets choked up while praising Lila Forde as top nine perform during semifinals on NBC

John Legend got emotional while talking about Lila Forde on Monday's episode of The Voice as the top nine performed during the semifinals on NBC.

The 44-year-old coach praised 24-year-old Lila from Seattle after she closed the two-hour show with a moving rendition of the Joni Mitchell song River.

The semi-final episode featured the top nine singers each performing a fan-selected song, along with a trio performance of a Taylor Swift song.

Lila's fans requested her to perform a Joni Mitchell song and she delivered as she tried to land a spot in the season 24 finale.

The singer said her biggest fans were her mother and father, who run a meditation retreat in Washington.

“America fell in love with Lila because she is a true artist. She's a real musician,” John said during rehearsal.

He told Lila she sounded “gorgeous” and said he wanted her to be in the final.

Lila said she felt comfortable with John and admitted she had past mentors who let her down.

“It means so much to be where I am now and have this person tell me that I am enough, and it gives me the confidence to know that I am good enough to make it to the finals. I know I'm good enough to win this thing. It's like it changed my life,” Lila said.

Lila received a standing ovation from the coaches and host Carson Daly, 50, asked new coach Reba McEntire, 68, for her reaction.

“You must feel so good after that performance, and I sympathize with the people who said you didn't have what it took. Wow. I'm glad you didn't listen to them because you're so good,” Reba said.

Reba told Lila that she had touched their hearts.

'People can sing, but there are people who can sing with their hearts, and so can you, Lila. You're so good,” Reba added.

Carson then went to John for feedback about his singer Lila.

“Lila, oh my God,” John said.

“You're a lucky man, John,” said coach Niall Horan (30).

'Oh my God. You stopped the show again. You've made it your own show again. And it had so much wisdom, and heart, and integrity, and musicality and beauty. It was breathtaking. I absolutely loved it,” John said as he stood up, his voice cracking with emotion.

“Suffocated, John Legend,” Carson said.

The two-hour live show started with Ruby Leigh, 16, from Reba's team performing the John Denver song Take Me Home Country Roads at the request of fans.

Niall's singer Huntley then teamed up with Mac Royals and Lila to perform Taylor Swift's song Exile.

Gwen Stefani's singer Bias, for his fan-picked performance, sang Bless The Broken Road by Rascal Flatts.

Jacquie Roar, 38, from North Plains, Oregon, took over the Sia song Alive and her coach Reba said afterward that she was the “complete package.”
