The Voice Australia: Jessica Mauboy bursts into tears on air due to heartbreaking body image pain

Jessica Mauboy delivered an emotional message on television on Monday night.

The 34-year-old Voice Australia judge burst into tears when popular contestant David Aumua expressed his body image issues.

When he revealed that his weight prevented him from auditioning for the Channel Seven show for so long, the Burn hitmaker couldn’t hold back her tears.

“I was more embarrassed to show myself,” the aspiring singer told judges Jessica, Guy Sebastian, Jason Derulo and Rita Ora.

“I think when I was growing up as a big guy, choosing music was a hard choice for me because I felt like my songs that I love, my body doesn’t fit that kind of genre.”

He continued, “I knew I had the voice, but my body was kind of holding me back. And then I was like, “You know what? Stuff it.”‘

Jessica shared her empathy with the 24-year-old, saying it “hurt” her to hear that he “didn’t feel worthy enough” to go on the show.

“Our mind, you know, it definitely plays tricks on us when we have all the outside noise,” she said.

Jessica continued, “But if you can look in the mirror and acknowledge and respect yourself and say to yourself, ‘I have this. I have the ability. I have the power. I have the power. I am myself. I am unique. There is no one else like me in this world.”

It was at this point that Jessica choked and had to hold back her tears to finish her heartwarming message to David.

“And I love that you’ve come to a point in your life where you realize how amazing you are. How wonderful you are,’ she said.

Unsurprisingly, David then chose Jessica as his coach for the start of the season.

Jessica first came to the country’s attention as a shy teenager from Darwin in 2006 as the Australian Idol runner-up.

She revealed to Show And Tell in 2015 that she was never concerned about her body image in the early days of her career until she was thrust into the spotlight.

As shock jock judge Kyle Sandilands made cruel remarks about her “jelly belly,” Jessica said she became more defiant about keeping her body the way it was.
