The View’s Joy Behar was called into a meeting with bosses after she ‘crossed the line’ when she revealed co-host Sara Haines’ secret lesbian romance live on air.
The somewhat controversial host, 82, spoke about the brief gay affair Haines, 47, had in college while her parents sat in the audience for Wednesday’s show.
Behar interrupted cohost Whoopi Goldberg, 68, to ask if Haines would discuss the romance with her parents during their upcoming appearance on the program’s Behind the Table podcast.
She was criticized by her cohosts for “embarrassing” Haines and was stopped by bosses who told her the comment was “not okay.”
“Joy was praised by her cohosts and higher-ups for her on-air commentary about Sara Haines’ lesbian romance,” an insider told DailyMail.com. “She crossed the line when it came to relaying something she was told off air.

She also crossed the line morally with her conservative parents in the audience.
“Joy has no filter most days, but this is absolutely not okay and the higher ups have spoken to her.”
They continued, “Joy has apologized, but that doesn’t make it right. There are some things viewers don’t need to know and Joy embarrassing Sara was unprofessional.”
The outburst happened as Goldberg was plugging the podcast at the end of Wednesday’s show.
“I need to ask her a question,” Behar interrupted, turning to Haines. “Are you going to bring up that lesbian relationship you said you had with Smith?” [College]?’
Haines started laughing while their other cohosts reacted in shock.
When the camera panned to Haines’ parents, her father’s jaw dropped and her mother smiled.
‘Dad, earmuffs! Earmuffs!’ Haines said, miming with her hands over her ears.
When the camera cut to Haines’ parents, her father’s jaw dropped and her mother was clearly surprised
“It was off air that she told us that,” Alyssa Farah reminded Griffin Behar.
Sunny Hostin then joked, “Now it’s on the air.”
Haines made light of the awkward situation, joking, “It’s a good thing my dad isn’t always watching… But now he is.”
Goldberg added, “Now he will.”
A separate source told DailyMail.com: ‘This was something Sara had shared with the public off-air a week earlier, which is why Joy said it so freely.’
Haines grew up in an “extremely conservative” household and attended a left-wing liberal arts college for women in Northampton, Massachusetts.
She married attorney Max Shifrin in 2014. The longtime couple share children Alec, eight, Sandra, six, and Caleb, five.
Since joining The View in 2016, she has served as an occasional co-host.

Behar, who is worth an estimated $30 million, has been a fixture on the daily panel since 1997, aside from a brief hiatus between 2013 and 2015.
She’s not holding back and previously accused Haines of being a secret ‘lesbian’ when the married mother of three revealed she had visited Cubbyhole – a lesbian bar in Manhattan.
“She’s a lipstick lesbian,” she said in an episode in June.
She also shared her own thoughts on “getting it going” with a woman.
When asked if she’s ever dated a “lady,” she replied, “No, but one day I will… I’ll do it when I’m in my 90s!”
