The Umbrella Academy season 4 trailer reunites the Hargreeves family for one final mission before the hit Netflix show ends

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for The Umbrella Academy season four – and it looks like the Hargreeves family will be quitting with a huge bang in the show’s final season.

With only two months to go The Umbrella Academy‘s final episode launches (it’s out on Thursday, August 8), the streaming giant has finally given us some footage to think about before the hit series ends. Based on what’s shown, we can expect more dysfunctional and chaotic family drama, with the group regaining their strength after losing their superhuman abilities in the season three finale, and a final mission to – yes, you guessed it – save the world from another apocalyptic event.

Oddly enough, the teaser subverts our expectations of what we expected to see in the final entry of the superhero show. The final episode of season three indicated that Sir Reginald Hargreeves – the adoptive father of the group who, as we know from The Umbrella Academy season two, is also a merciless alien – would be the big bad of season four. However, it appears that he will actively help his foster children regain their powers to prevent another, potentially world-ending event.

Hargreeves’ children will also have to reacquire these skills, given what Netflix has teased about its plot. “The Hargreeves siblings split after the climactic showdown at Hotel Oblivion led to a complete reset of their timeline,” reads the Netflix story. ‘Robbed of their powers, everyone must fend for themselves and find a new normal – with wildly varying degrees of success.

“Yet the trappings of their eerie new world prove too difficult to ignore for long. Their father Reginald, alive and well, has stepped out of the shadows and into the public eye, overseeing a powerful and nefarious business empire. A mysterious association known as The Keepers hold clandestine meetings, believing that the reality they live in is a lie and that a great reckoning is coming As these strange new forces conspire around them, the Umbrella Academy must come together one last time –. and risk disrupting the shaky peace they all had to endure so much to finally put things right.”

One last ride to save the world – again

The debut of the first teaser comes after a new poster announcing the trailer’s impending arrival was unveiled two days ago (May 27). The aforementioned plot synopsis was not elaborated upon prior to the final outing of one of Netflix’s best shows. However, based on the giant, alien squid-like tentacles occupying parts of the artwork, it’s likely that Ben Hargreeves – whatever version we’re cooking up with him now – will play a major role. You know, because Ben has the ability to spawn the monstrous tentacles of an interdimensional Lovecraftian entity called The Horror from beneath his skin.

We might also learn more about the origins and composition of the marigold substance, that is, the mysterious matter that gave the Hargreeves children superpowers. In the bottom right corner of the poster is a congealed pool of this liquid-based material, with one of Ben’s tentacles – Bentacles, if you will – reaching for it. There’s still a lot we don’t know about the marigold, so I suspect season four will give us some more details about where it came from and how it played a role in the Hargreeves children’s supernatural births and subsequent abilities.

Almost two years have passed since Netflix confirmed this The Umbrella Academy would have an apocalyptic ending. Given the secretive nature of the show’s shortened final entry – it will only consist of six episodes, instead of the usual ten – we also knew very little about it before the first trailer was released. Indeed, eight months passed before we learned anything new: Netflix only chose to stick its head above the ground to reveal it The Umbrella Academy the new season four cast members in February 2023.

Since then, the streaming titan has been a bit more forthcoming with information about The Umbrella Academy season four. Last November, the show’s main cast teased that the show would “hit the ground running” in its “bittersweet” final episode. Then, Netflix revealed the shortest clips of it in early February The Umbrella Academy season four before the streaming giant was announced The Umbrella Academy four‘s official release date two weeks later.

The Umbrella Academy‘s final episode flattered to deceive – in my review of The Umbrella Academy season three, I felt it was the show’s worst entry – so I’m hoping the follow-up, one of the ten shows I’m looking forward to seeing in mid-2024, will be much better and give the series the oomph it deserved.
