The surprising list of jobs that are ‘recession proof’ in Australia: ‘Impossible to get sacked’

An Aussie worker has sparked an online debate about the most recession-proof jobs in the country.

The user took to Reddit to reveal that he landed a government job and was trying to decide if the role would be more stable than his current position at a private company in the environmental industry.

His question led to several suggestions for Australia’s most recession-proof jobs.

One person suggested hairdressers and funeral directors were the most solid jobs in the country.

While others said nurses, social workers or electricians are the most stable.

The user said, “With all the talk about the recession coming, does it make sense to be in the government or private sector?

‘I currently work for a private company in the infrastructure/environmental space, but there is an interesting opportunity to do similar work from the government’s site.

“I have a mortgage, so I don’t want to move just to get fired. What is the general consensus on work safety?’

One response was, “I worked in government years ago – it seemed almost impossible to get fired if you were a permanent employee. I had co-workers playing Facebook games/surfing the web all day – no one ever said anything.

“Not to say that some civil servants aren’t doing a great job – there’s just a lot that isn’t doing a whole lot.”

Another said, “Government is generally safe, but that doesn’t make it pay well.”

Several took the opportunity to suggest other industries that are recession proof.

One person said, “A man I work with picks up dead bodies. I assume that jobs are reasonably safe.’

One nurse said, ‘I’m in good health – worked as a nursing assistant during the GFC and now as a nurse. We are as hungry as the staff as ever. You don’t have to fire anyone, because people constantly drop out when they have a nervous breakdown from the stress.’

Australia could plunge into chaos with rising unemployment and poverty if the country slides into recession, leading economists warned last month.

If a recession came, unemployment would rise rapidly and poverty would “absolutely” increase, Matt Grudnoff, senior economist and director of the economic program at think tank The Australia Institute, told Daily Mail Australia.

Economist Ross Garnaut, a professor at the University of Melbourne, added that the costs of recession would be “very high” and send Aussies back to “prolonged unemployment”.

Mr Grudnoff said it could take years for Australia to recover from a potential technical recession – defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.
