The launch of Sony’s next-generation Xperia 1 VI may be just around the corner as marketing materials for the flagship smartphone were recently leaked.
Posted on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) by notable leaking Insider SonyImages reveal that the upcoming device will see a major camera upgrade compared to the Xperia 1 V. It will have not one, not two, but three 48MP lenses on the back, bringing high-resolution photography to the entire trio is possible. Each of the three will have an Exmor T for mobile image sensor; the same kind as on the main lens of the Xperia 1 V. What is unique about the technology it allows the phone to capture more light when taking a photo, while also “significantly reducing image noise.” Now that high level of quality is spread to the rest of the group.
Hardware specifications
In a follow-up post, Insider Sony describes the specifications of each camera.
The main lens houses an Exmor T 1/1.4-inch sensor with a “large aperture of f/1.4”. This setup should help the camera gather more light, which is useful for low-light scenarios. It features a 2x optical zoom and support for Dual-PD AF (Autofocus with dual phase detection). In short, it allows the camera to focus on the subject more accurately and faster than devices without this feature. Other notable features include the ability to record 1080p, supported by EIS (electronic image stability) to keep recordings stable.

Next is the ultra-wide camera. It is equipped with an Exmor T 1/2.7-inch sensor with a “focal length of 14-18mm”; perfect for those distant shots. The lens has an on-chip autofocus function that also allows it to focus on a subject quickly and accurately. How performance compares to Dual-PD AF is currently unknown.
The final camera is, as you’ve probably guessed, the telephoto option. Like the previous lens, it has an Exmor T 1/2.7-inch sensor with the same on-chip autofocus. The highlight, according to Insider Sony, is the lens’s 6x zoom. They claim that the telephoto camera will have “amazing detail thanks to the 48 MP sensor”. However, the 6x hybrid optical zoom is only accessible via sensor crop. Without the crop, the telephoto reaches a maximum of 3x optical zoom.
More to come
That’s pretty much all we know about the Xperia 1 VI. There are multiple comments on the Insider Sony responded to most people and said this is all the information available at the moment. Fortunately, we may not have to wait long to find out more.
News site NotebookCheck points out that there was another leak last September, indicating that the Xperia 1 VI will be officially unveiled at MWC Barcelona 2024 on February 28. But it can be shown a little earlier because the Leaker also posted an image advertising Sony’s MWC 2024 event to be held on February 26. Either way, we’ll have to wait a few weeks to hear what the Xperia 1 VI brings to 2024.
