- The meaning goes back to the beginning of the brand in the 1940s
Baskin Robbins has been a fan favorite of ice cream connoisseurs for decades, but it’s only now that people are noticing a hidden secret in the brand’s iconic logo.
Burt Baskin and his brother-in-law Irv Robbins both operated ice cream shops in the 1940s before merging into Baskin Robbins in 1953.
Their store offered a rare assortment of different flavors for the time, 31 in all, so customers could try a new ice cream for every day of the month if they wanted.
This exciting diversity became their selling point and the pair were eager to market it in their logo.

The original branding therefore placed the number 31 in a pink circle above the letters ‘Baskin Robbins Ice Cream’ in brown letters.
The logo was revamped in 1991, placing the 31 between the ‘Baskin’ and Robbins’ names and changing the color scheme to blue and pink.
It was then modernized again in 2006, with a more camouflaged 31 sections of the ‘B’ and ‘R’.
The logo was not modified again until 2022, keeping the hidden 31 but reverting to the traditional brown and pink colours.
Baskin Robins has now made over 1,000 flavors of ice cream, but maintains the 31 as an integral part of the company’s roots.
