Blackpool has replaced Glasgow as the area where men have the lowest life expectancy in Britain.

The average lifespan was shorter across Britain in the two years to 2023 – with children born in deprived areas expected to die up to 13 years earlier.

Life expectancy in England fell to 79.1 years for men and 83 years for women, data from the Office for National Statistics shows.

The worst statistics were in Blackpool, where a boy born between 2021 and 2023 is expected to live an average of 73.1 years and a girl 78.9 years.

In contrast, men in Hart, Hampshire have an average lifespan of 83.4 years, while women born in Kensington and Chelsea are expected to live 86.5 years.

The ONS’s Greg Ceely said the data from 2021 to 2023 “suggests we are yet to see a recovery from the decline in life expectancy during the pandemic.”
