The Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus could finally get an upgrade I’ve been waiting for

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus has been tipped to get a screen upgrade to bring back a WQHD display for non-Ultra Galaxy phones.

This comes through reliable tipster Ice universe, who tweeted that the Galaxy S24 Plus will have a flat screen with a WQHD display (i.e. 1440p resolution spread across a wide aspect ratio). The tipster also noted that the Plus model will have thin bezels, measuring 2.5mm on the sides and 1mm for the center frame; Judging by the rumors so far, these bezels could be thinner than those of the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Ice Universe also gave a weight of 195 grams for the Galaxy S24 Plus, saying it will be 7.7mm thick. For comparison: the iPhone 14 Pro weighs 206 grams and is 7.8 mm thick.

Resolution afterwards

Size isn’t everything; I tend to like the weight of an iPhone Pro model better than its Android rivals. What caught my attention is the resolution part of this rumor.

Samsung stopped giving WQHD resolution to its non-Ultra phones after the Galaxy S20. The idea here is that an FHD+ resolution uses less power than a higher resolution panel, and the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S23 in their standard and Plus guises last longer on a single charge.

But I’ve found that the screens, at least on the Plus models, are still large enough to warrant a higher resolution. In everyday use, the jump to WQHD over FHD+ isn’t hugely noticeable, for example when scrolling through X. However, the jump to WQHD when playing games and watching movies, or zooming in on photos, is bigger. noticeable. And by default, I’d make sure an Android phone with WQHD or FHD+ options was set to the former, as I enjoyed that extra sharpness even when battery life took a hit.

So I’ll be happy to see WQHD resolution back as an option for the Galaxy S24 Plus. With improvements in chip design – the Galaxy S24 range will likely have access to the rumored Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip – I hope the next generation of Galaxy phones will be more power efficient and better suited to a WQHD display.

Time will tell if this rumor materializes, probably around March 2024 when we expect to see the Galaxy S24 series. I’m all for upgrades on the Plus models. Sometimes I feel like the Plus can be ignored in the face of the impressive but expensive Ultra phones.
