Bloober Team’s remake of the horror classic Silent Hill 2 is not afraid to make fun of publisher Konami. Of the many changes and improvements included in the Silent Hill 2 remake is one of the most whimsical creative choices, a nod to an earlier attempt to modernize the game in 2012 Silent Hill HD Collection. That collection’s infamous use of the widely derided Comic Sans font is preserved in the Silent Hill 2 remake, but as an Easter egg for the most devoted fans.
The Silent Hill HD Collection for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 had a long list of problems, which Konami never fully resolved. But one of the most comical, unforced errors in that collection was the sign for Silent Hill Ranch, a location discovered early on Silent Hill 2. The developers saw fit to use Comic Sans as the ranch’s font of choice, a decision that symbolized the collection’s diverse concerns. (The original Silent Hill 2 used a simple sans-serif font for Silent Hill Ranch.)
Well, the Bloober team has that infamous sign in the Silent Hill 2 remake, which one YouTuber GmanLives discovered by peeking outside the normal boundaries of the game.
Silent Hill 2 players won’t see that eerily recreated Comic Sans board normally in the game; they would have to play with the camera in the Windows PC version of the remake to recognize it. Still, it’s satisfying to know it’s there.
The Bloober Team remake is full of little details like this: changes that aren’t noticeable, but welcome additions that respect the original Silent Hill 2 and small references to other Silent Hill games. Players can dive in whenever Silent Hill 2 will be officially released on Tuesday for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.
