The reason for Manchester United and Everton’s unusual kick-off time, scheduled for 7pm on Sunday night, has finally been explained.

Questions were raised when it became known that Erik ten Hag’s side would travel late to Goodison Park on Sunday – something that is rare in the Premier League.

However, as the game was originally scheduled for Saturday, it has now been revealed that it has been rescheduled as part of the competition’s new rules around the 12:30 PM kick-off on Saturday.

BT Sport usually get the broadcasting rights for the Premier League kick-off at 12.30pm on a Saturday, but when it was announced that that match would be Everton vs Man United it was decided to change it.

This is because Erik ten Hag’s squad will be in Cyprus on Thursday when they face Omonia Nicosia in their Europa League group stage match – thus needing more time to recover before traveling to Merseyside.

This comes as part of the Premier League’s new ruling that clubs playing in European competitions on Wednesday or Thursday will not be eligible to play in the 12.30pm Saturday slot.

A late kick-off on Sunday is common in other European competitions and could soon be something English football fans are familiar with.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was one of the first managers to raise concerns about the playing schedules in 2020, when he claimed he ‘wouldn’t finish the season with 11 players’ if things didn’t change.

After the Reds’ match with Leicester two years ago, Klopp said: “I dare not say it, but I think it could happen not only to us, but also to other teams.

“You (BT Sport) my special friends are asking us to go on Saturday at 12.30pm which is almost a crime to be honest. It has nothing to do with tonight’s game, but congratulations for that.”

Klopp continued: “It was never about us when I talked about it. It concerns all players, players from England, players who will play at the European Championship next summer.

‘But if you [Sky] don’t start talking to BT then we’re all done. Sky and BT need to talk because if we keep playing Wednesday then Saturday [at] 12.30pm, I’m not sure we’ll finish the season with 11 players – all the top seven.”
