The real reason MasterChef Australia ditched their Katy Perry theme song after bizarre theories on why the jingle suddenly disappeared

Fans of MasterChef Australia were left devastated last year when producers decided to cut the cooking show’s Katy Perry theme song Hot N Cold from the end credits.

According to fan theories, the singer’s 2008 global hit was sold because it was too expensive.

After viewers took to social media to demand the tune be brought back, Channel 10 finally came forward with a reason for the hiatus.

“The opening credits will be removed from season 15 in 2023,” a Channel 10 spokesperson said Pedestrian TV.

“And it was decided to take action more quickly at the top of each episode.”

Fans have previously come up with wild theories about the change.

“I assumed it’s not used because the lyric could be taken in a dark way – ‘you’re hot (alive) then you’re cold (not alive)’,” one viewer suggested on Reddit.

This suggestion appears to be a reference to the death of MasterChef Australia judge Jock Zonfrillo, who passed away suddenly in May 2023.

Other MasterChef fans suggested that dropping Perry’s song was just about the cost of retaining the rights to the hit.

Channel Ten removed the track because licensing fees became too expensive, Yahoo Lifestyle claimed at the time.

Although international editions of MasterChef do not use Katy Perry’s song in their intros, it was particularly loved by Australian audiences.

Fans watching at home were left perplexed and disappointed by the decision, with some pointing out that it was now harder to remember the names of the contestants.

“I miss Katy Perry and the contestants throwing food and using hibachis as an intro,” one person complained on Twitter.

“Um excuse me @masterchefau where is our Katy Perry this season?!” someone else asked.

Perry, 39, made headlines in 2020 when she appeared as a guest on the show.

But not all fans were impressed as some viewers slammed the then-pregnant singer for wiggling her bum for the camera during a taste challenge.
