Given that the Google Pixel Watch 3 launched on September 10, 2024, in two sizes, with new Fitbit integrations, and running Wear OS 5, it was likely only a matter of time before some of its software features rolled into previous Pixel Watches as well.
As expected, Google has announced that the latest Pixel Watch Update brings Wear OS 5 to the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2. The update has only just started rolling out and is being rolled out in phases, so you may not see it available as an over-the-air update right away.
It contains more than just bug fixes and security patches.
Wear OS 5 comes to Pixel Watch 1 and 2
Google’s latest version of WearOS isn’t necessarily a redesign or a rethink, but it does bring a few changes that Pixel Watch wearers can take advantage of. In addition to bug fixes, you can expect new watch face colors and more widgets – aka complications – to choose from. You’ll also be able to push different data metrics to the watch face from the developer side.
Like the Pixel Watch 3, the new app grid launcher is coming to the first and second gen, making it easier to find and view all of your apps. There are better camera controls, allowing you to use your Pixel Watch as a viewfinder for your connected smartphone’s camera, more practical and less of a gimmick. Pixel Recorder is also coming to the wrist.
Google promises a lot of quality improvements for WearOS 5, such as bug fixes and “performance updates.” To be eligible for the WearOS 5 update, you’ll need to make sure your first- or second-generation Pixel Watch is running Wear OS 3.5 or Wear OS 4.
WearOS 5 is coming to the September 2024 update, which is rolling out in waves now, so it could show up right away. If you’re inclined to check, swipe down from the watch face on your Pixel Watch and tap Settings. From there, navigate to System and then System Updates to check for an update. If one is found, you can install it and wait while your Pixel Watch goes through the motions of downloading, installing, and restarting.
Regardless of how you download WearOS 5, it’s great to see Google continuing to support the previous generation of Pixel Watches.
