THE NOTEBOOK: Whistling is proving Roberto De Zerbi’s secret weapon

THE NOTEBOOK: Fans rightly turn up their noses at ridiculous scarf prices, Trent Alexander-Arnold laments his bad day despite a vital goal-line clearance, and whistling is proving to be Roberto De’s secret weapon Zerby.

Kaoru Mitoma’s stoppage-time goal gave Brighton a 2-1 upset against Liverpool on Sunday, knocking Jurgen Klopp’s side out of the FA Cup.

Harvey Elliott’s opening goal for the Reds was swiftly disallowed by Tariq Lamptey’s deflected shot off Lewis Dunk, before Mitoma scored an injury-time strike to continue Liverpool’s woeful run of form.

Here Sportsmail’s DANIEL MATTHEWS has picked out some of the things you might have missed from the Amex on Sunday…

Half scarves have had their day

Fish in a barrel, this, of course, but half and half scarves – surely we are finally approaching the endgame.

Without going into detail, Susie Dent, has the word ‘souvenir’ ever been misused more willingly than to describe knitwear offered outside of Amex?

The scarves, sold for £15 by a handful of hopefuls, featured the names of both teams, the date of Sunday’s game and even the occasion. ‘FA Cup Fourth Round’.

A difficult sell. As one child who showed mild interest was told: ‘It’s going to be five bucks after the game.’

Brighton play to the whistle

The electric start from start to finish helped create a good atmosphere at AMEX. Despite all the noise and color, however, Roberto De Zerbi managed to make himself heard.

I eat? A whistle that pierces the air and seems to do more than just get your players’ attention.

Several times the coach whistled to indicate that the players near him were free. He even helped pass instructions to Pervis Estupinan, who was on the other side of the pitch.

Jurgen Klopp has his own version, but the Liverpool manager was frustrated when a message fell on deaf ears.

Tit-for-tat line of contact

Here a war of pettiness by proxy broke out on the touchline. First, as De Zerbi was looking to provoke a quick throw-in, Harvey Elliott came from behind and brazenly knocked the ball out of his arms, much to the amusement of Darwin Nunez and company on the Liverpool bench.

Then, a few minutes later, Klopp allowed himself a smile as Cody Gakpo went to collect the ball and De Zerbi flicked it. Delicious eye for an eye.

De Zerbi rallied after Harvey Elliott cheekily stopped his side with a quick throw-in.

Mitoma outshines Trent

A nod and a grimace from Trent Alexander-Arnold as he was replaced just before the hour.

A vital goal-line clearance aside, this was another punishing afternoon spent trying to chain Kaoru Mitoma, the standout player of the game even before her last goal.

Alexander-Arnold didn’t offer much of a threat in possession either, with Klopp visibly stumped by a missed pass from Hollywood.

Trent Alexander-Arnold looked visibly disappointed when he hooked up in the second half.
