Chelsea closed the gap between themselves and 10th-placed Newcastle to one point with a deserved win over the Magpies at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening.
Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring with a nice move in the sixth minute, but the visitors hit back through Alexander Isak.
Cole Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead with a brilliant strike before substitute Mykhailo Murdryk doubled the lead after kicking through on goal.
Jacob Murphy pulled one back with a fierce attack, but it turned out to be only a consolation.

That much for Wrexham?
On Monday, an email landed in Chelsea fans’ inboxes saying VIP tickets for their pre-season match against Wrexham were now on sale.
The price of the diamond package? Only $2,995 (£2,338) per person. For that, you would hope that a goody bag with real diamonds is included.

Strasbourg fans have had enough
Chelsea’s owners have kick-started their multi-club model by adding Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace to their portfolio less than a year ago.
However, Ligue 1 supporters, who have yet to win in 2024 and are battling relegation under Patrick Vieira, plan to protest against their overlords at Clearlake Capital at the end of this month.
Strasbourg’s biggest fan group, Ultra Boys 90, say they are being used as Chelsea’s henchmen, with a policy of only signing players aged 21 or under to see if they sink or swim. At this moment the Strasbourg of Vieira is sinking.

Jackson’s slick film
Nicolas Jackson’s tap-in was so disguised that Chelsea’s opening goal was initially given to Cole Palmer at Stamford Bridge.
But replays showed it was a smart move by the £32million striker. At least Jackson can now say he has scored as many Premier League goals as he has yellow cards: nine apiece.
U21 clash is a one-sided affair
Newcastle’s Under 21 team find themselves bottom of the Premier League 2 table after their latest defeat – a 7-1 thrashing of Chelsea. Jamie Miley, Lewis’ older brother, was in line for the losers.
The relationship with Senegal is flourishing
Pape Daouda Diong is a 17-year-old training at Chelsea after arriving from the Darou Salam Academy in Senegal.
The plan has already been capped by his country and the plan is to send the midfielder to Strasbourg once he turns 18 in June.
Chelsea rolled out the red carpet for Senegalese academy chairman Galasse Mbacke at Cobham last week in a sign of their blossoming relationship, but club sources insist there is no official partnership.
A-lister present
Adam Sandler was at Stamford Bridge and you can imagine the regret among those looking for puns in the press box that Billy Gilmour no longer plays for Chelsea.
Academy talents replace sick stars
Conor Gallagher missed three days of training this week due to illness. His absence, along with others, saw Chelsea call up nine graduates from their academy to train with the first team.
