Full spoilers ahead ahead The rings of power season 2 finale. Potential spoilers also follow for seasons 3 and The Lord of the Rings books.
The rings of power star Charlie Vickers has three big hopes for Sauron heading into the show’s third season — and the creation of the One Ring isn’t the one he’s “looking forward to most.”
Come on The rings of power In the final episode of season 2, I sat down with Vickers to discuss the final chapter of this season and where he wants Sauron’s story to go next. Season 3 hasn’t been officially announced yet, but with the showrunners and writers working on it in late August and rumors circulating online that it will be renewed for another season, a third installment seems like a safe bet.
Unsurprisingly, thoughts are turning to the next outing of the high fantasy series. Vickers, who plays Sauron on the hit Prime Video show, is among those wondering where the Dark Lord’s journey will go from here. Sauron’s backstory is covered extensively in JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings books and broader literary works. But if The rings of powerThe first two seasons of the series have taught viewers everything: to expect changes – big and small – in Amazon’s TV adaptation compared to what plays out in the source material.
Chief among these creative deviations was that the One Ring, the legendary artifact that Sauron creates to try to control those who wield the other 17 rings, was not forged along with its brethren in Season 2. However, with Sauron in the possesses Fëanor’s hammer and Vickers is skilled in the art of ring making and believes it is inevitable that the One Ring will be created in Season 3.
“It seems like the next logical step,” Vickers mused when I asked him if he expected Sauron to create the One Ring next season. “If you look at this period (the Second Age) in the books, I see that the show might be going in that direction. That would be very exciting, but the questions I’m constantly asking myself now are: ‘What happens to the One Ring if Sauron becomes Númenor?’ and ‘Would Pharazôn imprison Sauron wearing the One Ring?’ Perhaps Pharazôn doesn’t know the power of the One Ring, but hey, the One Ring’s creations seem like the next piece of the puzzle.
Vickers’ reference to Sauron’s eventual return to Númenor – remember, he visited it in Season 1, albeit under the disguise of Halbrand, alongside Galadriel – is a hugely important moment in Middle-earth’s Second Age. Whether it happens in Season 3 or beyond, his journey back to the soon-to-be-doomed island kingdom is an inevitable and vital storyline that will play out in one of the best Prime Video shows someday.
However, despite the creation of the One Ring, Sauron still has other parts of his grand master plan to ‘heal’ Middle-earth that must be accomplished before he travels to Númenor. In the season 2 finale, Sauron finally got his dark magic-wielding hands on the Nine, aka the group of rings created for the kings of mortal men. For diehard Tolkien fans, or those who have seen Peter Jackson’s live-action Lord of the rings movies, it’s clear what’s going to happen next – and Vickers can’t wait to see who he’ll hand out these mind and soul poisoning rings to.
“The Nine are such an iconic part of literature,” Vickers said. “They were brought to life in popular culture by the Peter Jackson films. If that’s next, the handing out of the nine rings will be incredibly exciting to see. I have no idea if I’ll give them to existing characters in the film gonna give.” the show and what they (showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne) will do with it, but it would be really cool to see their plans (for next season).
The creation of The One Ring? Bill. Handing out more black magic-based jewelry to other ring bearers? Double check. What could be more exciting than experiencing those two important moments in not only the history of Middle-earth, but also Sauron’s personal journey? It turns out that Vickers has two more wishes for what he wants to see in season 3 – one of which gruesomely ties into what happens to Celebrimbor’s corpse after his death in the source material.
“What I’m most looking forward to is the demise of Númenor,” Vickers said with a smile. “But I don’t know if we will achieve that next season. I also don’t know if the plan next season, as Sauron’s army rages through Middle-earth, is to have Celebrimbor on that spear (which he is). impaled in the season 2 finale) and paraded, as in the books, like a banner. I don’t know if that will happen, but I hope it does!
