The newly constructed roof terrace of the beach club in Mallorca, which collapsed last week and killed four people, was ‘illegal and unlicensed’
- The extension of the Medusa Beach Club in Palma was built illegally
- Court documents showed the owners did not have a permit to build it
- The collapse on Thursday left four dead and sixteen injured
The newly built terrace of a Mallorca beach club that collapsed last week, tragically killing four people, was built illegally, it has been revealed.
The extension of the ‘chill-out terrace’ of the Medusa Beach Club in Playa de Palma, on the Balearic island of Mallorca, was built illegally, according to court documents obtained by Ultima Hora.
The terrace of the two-storey building overlooking the beach, located on Cartago Street, collapsed without warning last Thursday evening, killing four people and injuring 16.
Local media reported that investigators are sending their reports to the judicial authorities, as well as to the homicide officers of the Spanish National Police Force, with the aim of arresting and criminally charging the club’s owners with reckless homicide and endangerment.
The report comes after it was reported that the club’s owners unveiled the expansion just days before the collapse.
Last Wednesday, a photo of the renovation was posted on Instagram with the caption: ‘Totally different, New rooftop.’

The collapse
Abdoulaye Diop was a nightclub bouncer for Black Magic, a club just a three-minute walk from Medusa. Unfortunately, he died during the collapse
The photo, along with all other photos, was removed from the club’s Instagram page after the collapse and replaced with a single statement in Spanish, English and German:
‘We are in shock. From Medusa Beach we would like to express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims. We will do everything possible and work with the authorities to understand what happened.
‘We would like to thank the emergency teams for their quick action.’
The bar is said to be popular with British and German tourists, although details about the identities of those affected remain scarce. The Foreign Office said on Thursday there were no reports that British nationals were involved in the incident.
A spokesperson said: ‘We are aware of an incident in Palma and there are currently no reports of British nationals being involved. We remain in contact with the Spanish authorities.’

Residents previously told MailOnline about the sudden collapse.
A resident told MailOnline: ‘It’s terrible, two floors have collapsed and everyone has fallen with them.
‘There were local people and tourists there. God help them.’
Tourists watched in horror from the beach in the dark as rescuers from the Spanish fire brigade made their way through the rubble.
Rescue teams have removed huge chunks of masonry and concrete from the ruins.
Of the four people who have died so far after the collapse, only one has been named.
