We have bad news for fans of The Muppets and their famous band Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem: The Muppets Chaosthe Disney Plus series that follows the hilarious adventures of The Muppets‘ house band, is not invited back for an encore.
Per TVLine, the feel-good musical comedy show will no longer be rocking for another session on one of the world’s top streaming services. Disney hasn’t officially announced that it won’t be coming back, but executive producer Jeff Yorkes has all but confirmed this The Muppets Chaos‘s streaming tour is over in a message on his personal X account (formerly Twitter).
What a long, strange journey it was! The highs (thanks Zoot!), the lows… Thank you to our loyal fans and viewers. I hope audiences continue to discover our little show and that it brings them some joy…and some chaos!! Rock on!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻 https://t.co/widGnavgqtNovember 21, 2023
“What a long, strange journey it has been!” Yorkes wrote in the wake of the news. “The highs (thanks Zoot!), the lows… Thank you to our loyal fans and viewers. I hope audiences continue to discover our little show and that it brings them some joy… and some chaos! Rock on! “
I hope so too, because The Muppets Chaos is a really funny show whose humor is from the hearty people Ted Lasso variety. The live-action comedy focused on Nora (Lily Singh), an ambitious record company executive who wants the Electric Mayhem to record their first-ever studio album. Chaos inevitably ensues.
Why doesn’t Disney renew The Muppets Mayhem?
It’s not because of bad reviews. The Muppets Chaos currently has an 86% fresh rating from critics on the review aggregator website Rotten tomatoes. It also proved to be a hit with viewers, judging by its near-perfect audience score of 95%.
What is going on? Why was it canned? And why haven’t we ever added it to our best Disney Plus shows guide? First of all, despite everything, it starts slowly The Muppets Chaos while it hits its funny and wildly entertaining stride as it progresses, viewers on the fence may simply be turned off by the slow opening episodes. That’s a shame, because it’s the kind of TV that you don’t actually see anymore.
Unfortunately, like many other Disney Plus shows, it seems to have struggled to find a large enough audience. In today’s cost-cutting streaming landscape, shows that don’t perform well may not last long. The Muppets Chaos never included in Nielsen’s top 10 streaming rankings and while Disney doesn’t usually talk about ratings (unless it’s a big hitter, like Loki season 2 is a magical success), that’s a safe bet The Muppets Chaos didn’t pull in huge numbers of Star Wars or Marvel types.
This isn’t the first time TV series have gotten the spotlight on Disney’s main streamer, either. In May, Disney Plus and sister streamer Hulu removed a bunch of shows from their back catalogs. Three months later, we learned that Disney Plus was also canceling shows before they even aired on the service.
Still, if you have one Muppets fan, don’t despair. Going to X in the wake of Bend‘s cancellation, co-creator Adam Goldberg says the whole point of the series was to set up a Muppets Verse, before adding, “Yes, I’m already cooking up more Muppets… IT’S HAPPENING!!!” The petition to bring back Muppets tonight starts here, folks.
