The MCU’s Fantastic Four will be a period piece, Kevin Feige confirms

Fantastic four is the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s greatest mystery, and perhaps its greatest hope. Besides who each member of Marvel’s first family is playing, we’ve been kept in the dark about most other details until now. In the first episode of the new Official Marvel Podcast, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige appeared as a guest and revealed that Fantastic four will essentially be a period piece, rather than being set in the modern MCU.

Fans first started speculating that the series could take the universe back in time when the first artwork was revealed, which was decidedly mid-century in style. While the art’s primary purpose was to reveal the actors behind each member of the team – starring Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Ebon-Moss Bachrach as Ben Grimm and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm – it also suggested For many fans, it was likely that the film would be set in the ’60s, the same decade in which the Fantastic Four debuted.

But while Feige seems to confirm in his podcast appearance that the film will be set in the ’60s, he also can’t help but add a few mysterious details to ensure the film’s intrigue is intact.

“So it’s a historical piece,” Feige said. “There was another piece of art that we released where Johnny Storm was flying through the air and making a Four symbol, and there was a cityscape in the corner of that image. And there were a lot of smart people who noticed that that cityscape didn’t look exactly like the New York we know, or the New York that existed in our world in the ’60s. Those are smart, smart observations.”

This could mean the movie takes place in an alternate dimension and the Fantastic Four gang is sent to the MCU’s Earth during the story, or maybe there are other Multiversal shenanigans, but either way, Feige still gives us no details.

Another piece of news the Marvel boss shared that should be particularly exciting for fans is that the movie will begin filming the day after Comic-Con 2024, meaning Fantastic four will be in production in about a month.

As for what we know for sure, Fantastic four will be released in theaters on July 25, 2025. In addition to the main cast, the film will also star Ralph Ineson as Galactus, Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal (the Silver Surfer), as well as Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne and John Malkovich in unannounced roles.
