The Masked Singer judge Joel Dommett breaks silence on Macy Gray drama after US singer stormed off the ITV show

Joel Dommett has broken his silence after Macy Gray ‘stormed’ The Masked Singer on Saturday night after becoming the latest celebrity to be voted off.

The presenter said it was the ‘funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life’ as the American singer, dressed as a giant Toad, left the stage after the results.

Speaking to Paddy Mcguinness on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, Joel joked that Macy couldn’t be disappointed about leaving the show early ‘because you get the same money and don’t have to do anything else’.

He said: ‘This is why The Masked Singer is so good, it doesn’t matter if you’re a good singer or not, the show doesn’t fit into either camp.

“The thing about Macy is she’s a legend, she has a recognizable voice and she might as well go because we all know it’s her and they’re putting the other person through because we still don’t know who they are.

“If you go home early, it’s a win-win situation because you get the same money and you don’t have to do anything else.”

The presenter said it was the ‘funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life’ as the American singer, dressed as a giant Toad, left the stage after the results.

He continued, “You can’t be annoyed when you’re dressed as a toad. In my professional career I love Macy, she has an incredible voice, but I’ve never witnessed anything funnier than a 6 foot toad storming off. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.

“And my shorts, I suggested they get shorter at every AD break, as a joke, and they did, and when she stormed off I was in like hot pants.”

Macy looked unimpressed and completely shocked ITV viewers as she left the stage after being announced as the latest celebrity to leave The Masked Singer UK.

The American singer had to remove her costume head to reveal her identity after she was voted out following a performance against Bear, Wolf, Pufferfish and Bush.

Joel also reshared a clip to his Instagram grid of him hosting the show as Macy walked away, simply writing, “lol.”

Meanwhile, judge Maya Jama shared a TikTok made by ITVX of Macy’s walk-off, which read: ‘Me in every discomfort:’

It comes after a source claimed Macy was completely ‘blindsided’ by being one of the first contestants to leave the UK show after reaching the final of the US version in 2023, in which she was disguised as the Sea Queen.

Macy was reportedly ‘shellshocked’ and ‘gutted’ that she left the hit ITV show so early despite happily joining the US version.

He said, ‘It doesn’t matter if you’re a good singer or not. The thing about Macy is that she has a recognizable voice and she might as well go because we all know it’s her and they’re passing off the other person because we still don’t know who they are.

He added: “In my professional career I have never witnessed anything funnier than a six foot toad storming away, it is the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life.”

Speak with The sunthe insider claimed, “When Macy stormed offstage, everyone was frozen in shock, but as soon as she reached backstage, the crew removed her mask so they could talk her down.

‘It was both the shock for her and the upset and at that moment she reacted very raw and human and wanted to leave. For a professional artist to reach that point shows how bad she felt.”

MailOnline has contacted ITV for comment.

Once she took off her mask, Macy wore a face of thunder and couldn’t hide her anger throughout the interview, answering Joel’s questions with blunt, one-word answers.

Watching the dramatic moment, viewers flocked to X to comment and they all said the same thing: how ‘awkward’ it all was.

Prue Leith was the first person voted off the show after being revealed as Pegasus, while Kate Garraway was the second to be voted out after being unmasked as Spag Bol.

It comes after host Joel, 39, revealed the Masked Singer’s return has “got crazier” as he said new show judge Maya Jama, 30, is “living a very ridiculous life”.

Joel told Principle Magazine: “It’s getting weirder and weirder. I think it’s getting weirder and weirder.

‘And if you thought it was weird, it gets even weirder. And we also gain more self-confidence as a production.

‘We’re adding more twists and interesting elements that you wouldn’t necessarily expect with the format.

“It’s just fun and we really enjoy it, but the production allows me to do pretty much whatever I want.”

The Masked Singer continues on ITV1 and ITVX on Saturday January 18 at 7pm.
