Alexander Armstrong was unmasked as the celebrity behind Chicken Caesar on The Masked Singer on Saturday evening.

During the episode, the actor and comedian, 53, battled Air Fryer, Bubble Tea, Owl, Eiffel Tower and Piranha.

Talking about participating in the show, he said, “I have been longing to do it, every year I always get messages asking are you so and so? Are you Traffic Cone? And I say maybe!

'I enjoyed it, it's the beginning of the journey and the end of the journey, but what a journey it has been!'

When asked if he wanted to keep it a secret, he added, “I've discovered that it's okay to keep it a secret. It's made very easy for us because we all have code names. I'm really good at talking about the codenamed program, so it was pretty good.

“Obviously it's a fact that we all have to wear a mask when we're walking around, we have to wear gloves, a full visor and all that. It just feels very Squid Game, but I don't mind that. It adds a bit of risk.

On not knowing who your co-stars are, Alexander said, “I think the strangest thing of all is that you obviously don't know any of the other people participating. The only clues you get are hearing them sing. Piranha, boy, oh boy, they are incredible. It's very strange not knowing who you're up against.

Joel Dommett has returned to host the ITV show, alongside judges Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Rita Ora and Mo Gilligan.

Next week's The Masked Singer heads to the Circus with Joel's panel and costumes reflecting this week's theme

Olly Murs will replace Rita, 32, on the panel as she has had a 'number of diary conflicts'.

The 39-year-old singer was given the nod for his long-running role on The Voice earlier this year, but was quickly tapped to join the Masked Singer family.

The characters who take the stage in the hope of fooling the panel and viewers at home are: Maypole, Cricket, Bigfoot, Dippy Egg and Rat.

The Masked Singer airs on Saturdays at 7pm on ITV1, ITVX and STV
