The makers of Elden Ring continue to talk about an Elden Ring movie
Elden Ring creators Hidetaka Miyazaki and George RR Martin seem to be hinting that a movie (or TV series) based on the open-world fantasy role-playing game is on the way – or at least they’re trying to make one happen, based on recent comments from the two Nebula Award winners.
In a recent interview with The guard, Old Ring director and president of FromSoftware Hidetaka Miyazaki said: “I don’t see any reason to make a different interpretation or adaptation of Old Ring, a movie for example.” He noted that FromSoftware does not have “the knowledge or ability to produce anything in any other medium” and would have to rely on a “very strong partner” to make it happen.
“We have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever we’re trying to achieve, but there is definitely interest,” Miyazaki concluded.
A few days after that interview was published, Old Ring co-creator George RR Martin cheekily wrote on his blog“Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or TV series based on it Elden Ring… I have nothing to say. Not a word, no, nothing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mama mama mama. What rumor?”
Elden Ring Publisher Bandai Namco has been hinting at an expansion of the game’s universe for two years now, calling the game the start of a new franchise. When FromSoft and Bandai Namco announced this in 2022 that Elden Ring After selling 12 million copies in its first month, the companies said: “Look forward to more of Elden Ring as an IP (…)) in hopes of expanding beyond the realm of games.”
“A lot of effort went into creating it Elden Ring to exceed the expectations of our fans worldwide,” said Yasuo Miyakawa, president and CEO of Bandai Namco Entertainment, in that announcement. “With a similar goal, we will continue our efforts to expand the brand beyond the game itself and into everyone’s daily lives.”
Other games from FromSoftware, including Dark Souls, BloodborneAnd Sekiro: Shadows Die Twicehave been adapted into other entertainment media, primarily in the form of manga and comic books that expand the story of each title. Old Ring has also been adapted to the manga formbut as a comedy starring an unwitting Tarnished named Aseo struggling pathetically to become Elden Lord. Presumably any bigger budget adaptation of Elden Ring would take a more serious approach.
Although neither FromSoftware nor Bandai Namco have officially announced a film or TV adaptation of it Old Ringit seems that the creators of the game are on board. Such a project would give Martin another chance to not finish it The winds of winterand give FromSoftware much more exposure outside of games.
But what would an adjustment of Elden Ring even look like? Probably not a direct adaptation of the events of the game, but as an extended version of the lore leading up to the setting of Old Ring. Before the playable portion of this universe, there is a sprawling medieval fantasy political drama that involves complex family and romantic relationships, political power struggles, and just a small a bit of incest. That’s not just a proven recipe for Martin, a prequel that outlines the lore Elden Ring would certainly go a long way in helping the over 25 million players understand what the heck is going on.
