Howard men’s basketball became the first team to be eliminated from this year’s NCAA Tournament after missing three 3-pointers in the final eight seconds of the game against Wagner.

The Bison trailed by 13 points with just over four minutes left in a game they never led after falling 7-6, but slowly chipped away at the Seahawks’ lead for a chance to score on their final possession to tie the match.

Down 3, a goal from beyond the arc would have sent Tuesday night’s First Four game in Dayton between the pair of No. 16 seeds into overtime.

Jordan Hairston missed the first attempt as the ball bounced off the front rim. He got the ball back for another attempt, which missed the rim completely.

The final shot of the game was taken by Marcus Dockery, whose three-point attempt also hit the leading edge, sending Howard home.

Neither Howard nor Wagner had previously won an NCAA Tournament game before Tuesday.

The Staten Island Seahawks will play North Carolina in their home state of Charlotte on Thursday.

Should Wagner pull off the huge upset over the Tar Heels, it would mark the second straight season that a No. 16 seed has defeated a top seed, with Farleigh Dickinson beating Purdue a year ago.

A 16-on-1 upset has only happened twice in NCAA Tournament history, and each time since 2018.

The first was UMBC’s 20-point win over Virginia six years ago.
